As Occupational Therapists, we regularly aim to improve children’s visual discrimination skills. We often find that some children reverse letters, skip words or letters, struggle with knowing their left from their right, and often have difficulties tracking letters and words across the page.
Our letter tracker app has been designed to help all levels – those starting to learn how to read, and those children struggling with visual discrimination.
Each level consists of rows of random letters. We suggest working your way through the letters. Once you’ve selected a letter, you then have a set time to find only that letter, BUT, there’s a catch. To train your eyes, you must work from left to right, and top to bottom.
With each level the time decreases, but you can also set the time to suit you.
The letter is highlighted for you after a few seconds in the first two levels.
In all levels the line you need to focus on is slightly highlighted, to help you.
In the last level the letters are still random, but chunked, as words would be.
Every line contains at least one letter that is needed. If you skip a letter, you won’t be allowed to select the next one, until you have found the one before.
Letter Tracker has been developed by Paediatric Occupational Therapist Aniesa Blore. It is used routinely in her practice with children at school, home and in the clinic setting.
